Sven B. Schreiber (sbs) I was lucky enough to get my hands on the 1975 debut album of this band, just when it was released, and "C'è un paese al mondo" was - and still is - one of my top favorites of 70's Italian symphonic rock. Sadly, the splendid debut was also the band's swan song, but thanks to a recent resurrection, including original lead singer Alberto Ravasini and one of the main songwriters, Sergio Lattuada, we get the pleasure of a late follow-up album, sounding quite authentically like "Maxophone" as we knew it. Favorite track: Nel fiume dei giorni i tuoi Capelli.

about

Maxophone is a very important name within the vast world of Italian progressive rock. Like many other colleagues, they disbanded after only one self-titled LP, released in 1975; but thanks to that beautiful album, we can put Maxophone in the élite of the greatest Italian prog bands. After the recent comeback, we were still missing one piece: a new album consisting of original songs, which finally sees the light here, in "La fabbrica delle nuvole" (The clouds factory), proudly and exclusively released by AMS Records.

It's a profoundly progressive album, characterized by typical counterpoint and classical orchestration structural elements, that flow into contemporary music and sometimes even into real fusion. Two other components live together in this album, in a surprising way: a rock-oriented soul, thanks to Marco Croci (bass and vocals) and Marco Tomasini (guitar and vocals), and another one more tied to the band's vintage sound, 'personified' by historical components Sergio Lattuada (piano, keyboards and vocals) and Alberto Ravasini (guitars, keyboards and lead vocals); the line-up is completed by the new entry Carlo Monti (drums, percussion and violin).

But what makes "La fabbrica delle nuvole" really innovative is the collaboration with writer and journalist Roberto Roversi, that finds its roots in the early '90s from a first encounter with Alberto Ravasini.
The band inherited the lines that Roversi had already begun to write for them: that was the decisive push towards the final working steps of a record that today finally sees the light.

"La fabbrica delle nuvole" therefore sounds like a collection of poems, set to music by an essential Italian prog group who, while having updated their sound to these actual times, are still surrounded by that 'mystical' aura that already marked their first, unforgettable record.
